The Mantis platform is a feature rich sensor measurement platform designed with the hobbyist in mind. The Mantis product line provides a versatile and extensive collection of probes and accessories to collect, store, and display experiment data, whether as part of a curriculum or DIY project. This Bluetooth enabled smart device supports STEM based activities on development platforms to include IOS and Windows devices.

The Mobile App

The second component of the Mantis platform is our mobile app. The Mantis mobile app is the exciting and easy to use interface for the Mantis sensors. The Mantis mobile app allows the collection of the sensor data using Bluetooth technology. The easy to use Mantis app can provide you with experiments to perform that have been created using vetted curriculum, or you can easily start collecting data using your very own ad-hoc experiments. One of the Mantis mobile apps exciting features is to provide sharing of your collected data with your lab partners, your instructor or the ability to send the data to the Mantis website.

How do I login to my Mantis account?

You will want to make sure that you have created a Mantis account first. If you have not created a Mantis account yet, please see the help topic for creating your very own Mantis account.

From the Mantis app home page, select the Login option located on the bottom right.

Tap inside the User Name text box, and enter your User Name (email address that you used to create your Mantis account with). Next, tap inside the Password text box, and enter your password. Tap the Login button, and you will now be able to experience all of the fun and exciting features the Mantis app has to offer.

If you have received an error message while attempting to login, see the “I forgot my password” help topic to assist you in recovering your password.

Creating a Mantis account takes only a few minutes to create, and will give you access to the exciting Mantis app, and also the very powerful Mantis website.

You can create a Mantis account from the Mantis app, or you can create your Mantis account using the Mantis website. Once you have created your Mantis account, you can use the same account information to login to both exciting Mantis tools!

How to create a Mantis account from the Mantis app:

From the Mantis app home page, select the Create an account option located on the bottom left.

Tap inside of the First Name text box, and enter a First Name. Tap inside of the Last Name text box, and enter a Last Name. Tap inside the User Name text box, and enter your email address that you would like to associate with your Mantis account. Tap inside the Password text box, and enter a password that you can easily remember, but is hard to guess. Tap inside the Confirm Password text box, and enter the same password which you entered in your Password text box. Tap the Finished, create account button.

Finding an Experiment by Browsing-

The first step in finding an experiment is to tap on the Browse or Start your own Experiment tile found on the Mantis app home page.

The Mantis app will present you with a list of the sensors available to use for your ad-hoc experiment. Tap the sensor you would like to use for gathering the information for your experiment.

The Mantis app will connect to the selected sensor you have designated (if you have not turned the sensor on, the Mantis app will search for the unit, and present you with a sensor not found message. Turn your sensor on, and tap the Scan Again button on the not found message, the Mantis app will now attempt to synch with your selected sensor).

How do I mark an experiment step as complete?

You might not be able to complete an entire experiment during a session. If you do not complete the entire experiment, one useful tool for reminding you where you left off, is to mark the steps that you have already finished as complete. The visual clue will allow you to start right where you left off. By marking the step complete, you are still able to view and collect data for the step, so do not worry that you will not be able to review what you were able to finish, or refresh your memory on what the experiment was all about!

To mark an experiment step as complete, from the experiment main page, tap the status box in the upper right hand of the step you want to mark complete! You will see a green check mark that lets you know right where you left off in the experiment process. Tap the status box again and the check box will be removed.

You have run the experiment step, and now you have valuable data to save! There are a few options on where to save the data that you have just collected.

How to save data to your account-

After collecting your data, tap the save feature.

The Mantis app will give you an opportunity to name your file, and it will allow you to select how you would like to save your data. We want to name our file, and then make sure we have selected the My account option. When we have a file name completed, tap the Save feature.

How do I connect the strain gauge to the Force Motion sensor?

Connecting the Strain Gauge to the Force Motion sensor

 

To Connect the Strain Gauge to the Force Motion sensor, you will need the Force Motion sensor, the extended wire connectors, a 3mm flat head micro screwdriver and the strain gauge.

Step 1 – Make sure you have the Force Motion sensor oriented with the Mantis logo facing up. Locate the screw connectors on the Force Motion sensor. These screw connectors will allow you to loosen the wire connector slots on top of the Force Motion sensor.

Step 2 – Using the 3mm flat head micro screwdriver, loosen the two farthest left screws.

HELPFUL HINTS:

  • Turning the screws counter clockwise will loosen them
  • Do not loosen the screws too much as they will fall out of the unit
  • The screws that you loosen are closest to the charging port on the Force Motion sensor
  • Have good lighting to see the screws

 

Step 3 – Locate the exposed wire end of the extended wire connector.

Step 10 – Turn the Force Motion Sensor ON.

To turn the Force Motion Sensor ON, you will need the Force Motion Sensor that has been charged and ball point pen with the cap removed.

Step 10a – Locate the power button for the Force Motion Sensor.

Step 10b – Depress the power button for one full second using the tip end of a ball point pen.

The Force Motion Sensor will now display a red light inside the sensor, which lets you know the unit is ON and ready to be used. The red light will flash on every 5 seconds when the unit is ON. If the Force Motion Sensor does not power ON, the unit may need to be charged. If the Force Motion Sensor is charged, you may not have depressed the power button for the full one second.

 

Step 11 – Locate the strain gauge notch in the Mantis cart.

How do I use the OTA or Over the Air feature to update my sensor’s firmware?

Occasionally an update to your sensors firmware will need to be performed to keep your sensor running the most recent version. The sensors that may require a firmware upgrade are:

  • Weather Station
  • Force Motion Sensor
  • Mantis Unit
  • Sensor Wand

Some helpful tips before you get started-

  • The update process could be as long as ten minutes, depending on the update content for your sensor
  • Make sure your sensor is either fully charged, or that you have the sensor plugged into a power source (this will prevent you from losing power to the sensor during the update)

 

You will check for sensor updates by following the steps below:

Step 1 – From the Mantis App Home Page select menu option.

A note about the updates. The Mantis app will search for all devices that you have turned on and near your mobile device. When the Mantis app finds your device(s), it will display them on the OTA Device Upgrade page. Select the sensor to update, and the Mantis app will search for any updates to the firmware for the device. If you do not see a device on the OTA Device Upgrade page that you expected to see, make sure the device is turned on and near your mobile device.

The Mantis app will now display that the Mantis SIP has been paired and is ready to start displaying data as well as collect the data when you are ready to do so.

The ad-hoc experiment page will be presented with the data streams showing on the left side sensor panel actively displaying sensor data.  You are now ready to use your Mantis SIP!  If you would like to un-pair the device you can simply tap the un-pair button located on the left side of the main navigation bar.

How do I turn ON my Weather Station?

Powering On the Weather Station

 

To turn the Weather Station ON, you will need the Weather Station that has been charged.

Step 1 – Locate the power button for the Weather Station.

Step 2 – Depress the power button for two full seconds.

 

The Weather Station will now display a flashing red light located on the side of the unit, which lets you know the unit is ON and ready to be used. The red light will flash on every 5 seconds when the unit is ON. If the Weather Station does not power ON, the unit may need to be charged.

How do I turn OFF my Weather Station?

Powering Down the Weather Station

 

To turn the Weather Station OFF, you will need the Weather Station to be ON.

Step 1 – Locate the power button for the Weather Station.

Step 2 – Depress the power button and hold for 5 full seconds.

 

The Weather Station will now turn the flashing red status light OFF. The Weather Station will now be powered down. If the Weather Station status light continues to flash, repeat Step 2 above. You may not have depressed the power button for the full 5 seconds.

How do I charge my Weather Station?

Charging the Weather Station

 

To Charge the Weather Station, you will need the Weather Station, the power cord and a power source. The power source can be an outlet or a USB connection.

Step 1 – Locate the charging port for the Weather Station.

Step 2 – Identify the charging end of the power cord.

Step 3 – Plug the charging end of the power cord into the charging port of the Weather Station.

Step 4 – Decide if you will recharge using an outlet or by a USB connection.

For the wall outlet method:

Step 4.1 – Plug the USB end of the power cord into the outlet adapter.

For the USB method:

Step 4.2 – You will use the charging cord without any adapters for the USB configuration.

 

Step 5 – Plug the charging cord into the appropriate charging method.

 

                  For the wall outlet method:

               Step 5.1 – You will plug the outlet adapter into a wall outlet

               For the USB method:

              Step 5.2 – You will plug the USB end of the charging cord into a USB slot

You will see an illuminated green light (under the dome on top of the sensor) if you have plugged the charging cord into your power source correctly. The green light lets you know that the Weather Station is charging successfully. If you do not see an illuminated green light, you may need to check to see if your power source to charge from is providing power. You can charge the Weather Station even if it is currently in the ON status.
